Where to start?

Well here it is, the first post of a new blog. I’m not sure exactly where to start, so I guess I will describe my plans for this venture.

Runspiration is a term that I first heard from my best friend neL. I’m not sure if she coined it or heard it somewhere else, but it has become a common word in my daily vocabulary as I struggle for runspiration on most days. I have checked online and there is no definition for the word that I can find, but there are about 475 hits for it on google.

For me runspiration is anything that gets me motivated or excited to get my shoes on and go. Sometimes it’s new running shoes or clothes. Other times it’s really great weather to run in or a new song I want to listen to on my ipod or looking good (read:skinny) at a big event like a wedding or for vacation. It can also be having time to be alone in my own head because while running is very physical it is also very much a mental sport as well. The last source of my runspiration generally tends to be upcoming races. If I have a 10k race coming up I know I can’t not train or I will suffer the entire hour it takes me to finish.

So where does all of this leave my new blog you ask? Well I am hoping to use it to create more runspiration for myself. Nel emailed her cousin and I today looking for her own runspiration and I thought maybe if I started writing about it often it would cultivate itself. Plus Nel and Hilary (and the rest of the www) could look at it and maybe find some runspiration too. I plan on adding them both as contributors, in case they want to join in the fun and post here.

And what am I going to use for material? Not sure yet. Perhaps photos or quotes. Maybe results from my own races or evening jogs. Hopefully strangers that stumble on this will provide some runspiration too. So for now I will just say get running!!

  1. I began my blog for mostly the same reasons as you – to keep my motivation up for the times when I really don’t want to get up and go running. It’s been working!

  2. OH YAH!! Runspiration rocks.. Good times!
Just finished a great run- without breaking up with my husband and that has got to be a good sign!!
Looking forward to many more runspired days!

  3. I think it would be rude not to include Joe Fresh on the Gear section…hee hee…for those budget-challenged runners like myself who can’t afford the Lulu and RR gear for every article of running attire, JF is a lifesaver. :)

How do I add to the Gear and ipod sections, Jack?

    This is FUN!

  4. Other runners, both in person and “virtual,” are the best runspirations! :D I blog about running to connect with them (and because my husband’s getting sick of my running chatter, but it has to come out somehow!), in between the races that keep me focused.
